Did you know that 2009 marked Headstart Nursery’s 30th year in business? We celebrated by designing a brand-new logo and completely updating our website.

We want our new website to be a resource for you, our customers. Here are a few specific pages that we think you'll find useful:

  • A handy Plants-per-Acre Calculator was designed to help vegetable growers easily figure the number of plants needed per acre. Just enter the bed size, plant spacing, and number of rows per bed, and let this useful tool do the math for you!
  • An Ornamental Availability Listing is updated and posted every week. This report lists all extra Ornamental Plugs and Liners for sale by ship week.
  • For a blast from the past, visit our History page. You’ll learn about how Headstart Nursery has grown over the last 30 years — and enjoy some archival photos of the nursery in its early days.
  • Say cheese! On our new Staff Directory page you’ll find individual photos of all our pretty faces and/or ugly mugs, along with phone numbers and email addresses. Please don’t ever hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Ellepots are hot!

Watermelon in Ellepots

After the incredible success we had growing watermelon transplants in Ellepots last year, Headstart Nursery invested in a new higher-capacity machine that has enabled us to more than double our Ellepot production. We are currently running both machines day and night to keep up with the huge increase in customer demand.

What’s so great about Ellepots? These self-contained plugs made of degradable paper (grown in a 128 round cell styrene tray) have proven ideal for growing watermelon transplants. Due to improved air circulation around each individual plug, the plants root better and faster, resulting in hardy transplants that make the most of every seed.

Watermelon growers who tried Ellepots last year found them much easier to handle in the field, which increased the speed of transplanting and decreased labor costs. It’s not too surprising, then, that more than 90% of our desert watermelon customers have already switched entirely to Ellepots for their transplant orders.
