Liz and Megan

The Headstart Nursery team continues to grow along with our business. We recently added two new customer service representatives to keep up the same great level of service our customers have come to expect from us.

Elizabeth “Liz” Gabrio works mostly with vegetable customers and has done an outstanding job coordinating our speculation program and online availability. Megan Smith works more with ornamental accounts and also manages seed and cutting purchasing and receiving. We're glad to have them both on board!

Our Family Keeps Growing...

2012 has been a busy year for the Headstart family. Emily Demmert, our Accounting Manager, married Matt Angotti back in January. A few months later, Desert Logistics Coordinator Jesse Barriga married Isela Delgado.

Meanwhile, Daniel Clerou (Bakersfield Field Sales Rep), his wife Kathleen and big brother Pascoe welcomed a baby girl, Lucille Pauline, on April 6. Mike Fernandez, our Ornamental Technical Advisor, became a grandfather in May. And Castroville General Manager Chris Peck and his wife Carli welcomed little Ryland Gregory on June 30 — just in time for this newsletter!

Finally, congratulations to Mitchell Fairhurst, son of late Sales Representative Greg Fairhurst. Mitchell recently graduated from high school and will be attending Redlands University in the fall. After Greg’s passing, Headstart and its customers raised over $11,000, which has grown to more than $15,000 to help Mitchell with his future schooling. We are all so proud and know Greg would be too!

Headstart Impresses Organic Inspectors

Organic Transplants

Headstart Nursery had our CCOF inspection in Gilroy on June 21 and passed with flying colors. The inspectors were quite impressed by our thorough record-keeping, which allows us to trace each order from the seed lot used all the way to the field where the order was transplanted. This kind of careful tracking is especially important to maintain compliance with organic requirements. Headstart’s current CCOF certificate is posted online; a new document will be issued within the next few months.

Vegetable Online Availability Takes Off

After expanding our vegetable speculation program, Headstart Nursery now regularly posts vegetable transplant availability online. Customers from across the country are calling in to purchase both organic and conventional transplants for their home gardens or small farms. Plants can be purchased by the tray in 128, 162, and 200-cell sizes. We plan to continue increasing our speculation program over the next year to keep up with the demand. Check our vegetable availability page regularly to see what we’ve got on hand!

Ornamental News

  • The 2012 California Spring Trials were held in March, and Headstart Nursery had a great turnout. Our pack trial house featured new varieties from Danziger as well as our own newly streamlined plug and rooted cutting programs. We enjoyed welcoming visitors from all around the world and are already looking forward to next year!
  • Headstart continues to work closely with Danziger “Dan” Flower Farm and is one of three sites selected to be a rooting station for Danziger production.
  • Look out Ohio! The Headstart Nursery “dream team” (Randy Costa, Lisa Branco, Mike Fernandez and Hans Gerritsen) will be in town at the 2012 OFA Short Course July 14-17. They are looking forward to meeting with many of our customers, brokers, and suppliers there.
  • Headstart is now partnering with the Hortus Group, who have been working with Golden Field Greenhouses in Castroville for many years. We have added their product listings (including Cyclamen, Gerbera, Primula and Begonia) to the Headstart ornamental program and have also taken over most aspects of customer service for Hortus Group. If interested in booking any product, please contact Headstart directly or continue to watch our ornamental availability.

Christmas is Coming!

The holiday season starts early at Headstart Nursery. We’ve already started sticking more than 72,000 poinsettias at our Gilroy and Castroville facilities. Remember we do sell out quickly, so the earlier you can place your order, the better! Our online order form will be available on the Poinsettia web page in late October.
