Vegetable Transplants

Strawberry Fields Forever

Our ornamental department continues to see steady growth as we promote our diversified product lines. Headstart Nursery is now much more than a cut flower supplier. In addition to expanded offerings in perennials, pot crops, and prefinished products, we are currently working on a large strawberry project, with over 6 million plugs destined for the home gardener as patio plants or hanging baskets.

Check our weekly ornamental availability listing to see some of the many different crops we have in the greenhouses now!

Growing with Picas Software

For more than 12 years, Headstart Nursery has used Picas greenhouse production software and worked closely with developers at Innovative Software Solutions (ISS) to optimize the program for vegetable transplant and ornamental plug production.

In October, Headstart Nursery’s Assistant Production Manager Grant Cornia and IT Manager Jim Browne traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan for the 2013 Picas Users Conference. This event covered a wide variety of useful information, allowed customers to give feedback and suggestions, and provided great networking opportunities.

Shortly after the Users Conference, Adam Marcionetti from ISS came for a two-day onsite visit. Adam toured both the Gilroy and Castroville facilities and went through all processes and procedures as we demonstrated the life cycle of a typical crop at Headstart Nursery. We explored ways to use Picas to better track transplanting and grading. Adam also met with our Accounting department to discuss advance deposits, budgets, cost centers, and a purchase order system.

Headstart Joins the 21st Century

We are all enjoying the new, larger conference room at our Gilroy headquarters. In addition to providing a much more comfortable setting for our customers and staff, we can now take advantage of state-of-the-art video-conferencing with our desert team and get more people involved in critical nursery issues.
Although our management team still plans to travel regularly to the desert, we are definitely looking forward to using this new technology during the hot summer months!

Improved Fleet Management Using NexTraq

All Headstart Nursery trucks are now traceable using NexTraq GPS. NexTraq allows us to easily track the location of a single vehicle or our entire fleet. We are able to immediately see the status of our drivers, whether they are moving, idling, or stopped, and can monitor all activity including starts, stops, and duration of stops. NexTraq also makes it easy to quickly find addresses and ranch locations and dispatch the closest vehicle with optimized routes.

Steve Ray Leaves Headstart

As many of you are aware, longtime field representative Steve Ray has decided to pursue a new career path and is no longer working for Headstart Nursery. Steve worked with us for over 19 years, and we thank him for his dedicated service to our customers. We hope you will join us in wishing Steve well in his future endeavors.

To ensure a smooth transition and to continue providing you with the highest quality service, we ask that you work directly with our production and customer service team in the main Gilroy office. Please contact Lisa Branco, Mike Bushman, Liz Gabrio and/or Mike Trebino directly to address any questions you may have. See the Staff Directory page on our website for contact information. We thank you for your continued patronage of Headstart Nursery.

Welcome Baby Raegan!

Customer Service Representative Heather Guibert and her husband Justin welcomed a healthy baby girl on August 30, 2013. Raegan Atwood Guibert weighed in at 7 lbs 5 oz and measured 18.5 inches long.

Heather will be returning to work in January. For now, she is enjoying her time with Raegan, who is almost three months old and doing all kinds of fun new tricks, like smiling, cooing, and rolling around. Best wishes to the happy family!

More New Faces

Please join us in welcoming two new members of the Headstart Nursery team!
Stasha Maroney (on the left) joined Headstart in August as our new Accounts Payable clerk. She is also the founder of the Faultline Derby Devilz, the local roller derby team. When she is not at work or on the track, Stasha enjoys spending time with her two young kids.

Gloria Orozco (on the right) just started in November and will be assisting us in the seed and shipping departments as they are in season. A recent Biological Science graduate of San Jose State University, Gloria has always had an interest in agriculture. As a child, she spent time in the fields with her father farming corn, squash and beans.

Help Caelynn Fight Like a Princess!

Caelynn Iten, niece of our desert managers Doug Iten and Cole Iten, was recently diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Caelynn is a lovable, feisty and charming three-year-old who has remained strong as she undergoes chemotherapy treatments. We ask that you keep Caelynn and her family in your prayers.
