Introducing Radicle Seed Company

We are proud to announce that our sister company, T&C Supplies,  has a new name: Radicle Seed Company. This DBA change became official on August 1, 2014.

A lot has changed since the business was first founded as T&C Supplies back in 1985. The “T” is no longer with the company, and our primary focus has changed from greenhouse supplies to seed sales.

With a great team now in place serving the Salinas Valley, San Joaquin Valley, and Coachella Valley, it seemed like the right time for a complete makeover and a fresh start.  Check out the new website at www.radicleseed.com to find out more about seed sales and other services!

The Poinsettias are Coming...

At Headstart Nursery, Christmas starts in July. That's when we stick over 75,000 poinsettias for our annual community fundraiser. The plants are filling out nicely now and will start turning a deep, vibrant red in the coming weeks as the days start to get shorter.

We begin shipping poinsettias the week of Thanksgiving and do sell out every year. Give us a call at (408) 842-3030 or fill out our handy online order form so you don't miss out!

Headstart at Cultivate '14

In July, Melissa Campilli, Grant Cornia, Mike Fernandez and Lisa Branco represented Headstart Nursery at Cultivate ’14 (formerly OFA) in Columbus, Ohio. Cultivate is the largest all-industry horticulture exposition and convention in North America. With more than 10,000 attendees, this was the event’s best attendance in more than a decade! The convention is not-for-profit, and proceeds are used to further industry programs.

Headstart Team Helps Educate and Inspire Future Growers

Headstart Nursery was one of the stops on the California Seed Association Fall Seed Tour in September. On the tour were approximately 35 students from Fresno State, UC Davis, and Cal Poly learning about various aspects of our industry. To provide a broader view of our business, Chris Cornia, Jonathan Ramirez, Melissa Campilli and Lisa Branco all spoke about their roles at Headstart and how they contribute to the big picture. The CSA group invited us to dinner in Salinas to talk more and ask questions about the industry in a more casual setting.

Love and Marriage...

Romance was definitely in the air on August 16, 2014. That's when Desert General Manager Doug Iten and Bonny Choate got married in Chico (left). On the same day, Salinas Field Sales Representative Michael Trebino married Brittany Corda in Carmel (right).

Congratulations and best wishes to both happy couples!

Taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, Headstart-Style

OK, we know that by now you've probably gotten a little tired of all those ice bucket videos. But the ALS Challenge was especially meaningful for Steve and Randy Costa, who lost their mom Jean to the disease in 2012. So the Costa boys took on the challenge big-time — and also donated $500 to ALS research. We encourage you to watch the video for yourself (rated PG-13 for language!) and make a donation to this important cause.

As you can see, proud papa Harold stayed nice and dry throughout!

Melissa Campilli is New Ornamental Customer Service Manager

Melissa Campilli has been promoted to Ornamental Customer Service Manager. Since joining Headstart in 2012, Melissa has played a key role in the ornamental division and helped integrate the Castroville facility and new product lines. Please contact Melissa if you have any questions about ornamental sales.

Lisa Branco will continue to oversee all customer service for Headstart Nursery, but will focus on expanding the vegetable department and building Radicle Seed.

Good News for Caelynn!

It's been just over a year since Caelynn Iten (niece of Doug and Cole Iten) was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that primarily affects children.

The family is thrilled to report that Caelynn is now NED (No Evidence of Disease) and has been cleared to go to school!

Doctors will continue to closely monitor her health, but the family wanted to pass along this happy news and share their sincere gratitude for all the generous support from friends of Headstart Nursery. With your help, Caelynn will continue to "Fight Like a Princess!"

Headstart in the Community

Wining & Dining for a Good Cause

In June, Megan Smith, J.R. Roth, and Lisa Branco attended the 6th annual Wine & Dine Progressive Dinner hosted by the California Women for Agriculture Salinas Valley chapter. They enjoyed an evening out with friends in the industry on board luxury charter buses, making multiple stops for appetizers at the Braga Barn, dinner at Blackstone Winery, and desserts and dancing at the Amaral Barn. The money raised will benefit local CWA high school and college scholarships.

Headstart Buckles Up for the Salinas Rodeo

Headstart Nursery was proud to be a sponsor of the July 2014 California Rodeo Salinas, one of the top 20 professional rodeos in the U.S. and an important part of the Salinas and Monterey County communities for over 100 years. This event has a huge economic impact on local businesses and also gives back over $350,000 to local non-profit organizations each year.

Running for Mobility

In August, Chris Peck, Grant Cornia, Chris Cornia, Melissa Campilli and Lisa Branco joined Nunhems’ “Team Motivation” for the Salinas Valley Half Marathon. The team raised funds to support Mobility Wheelchairs, a small global charity that gives wheelchairs to individuals in developing countries.

Everyone crossed the finish line and lived to talk about it! (Pictured here: Chris, Lisa, and Melissa)

Young Duffers Hit the Links

Chris Cornia, Chris Peck, and Lisa Branco participated in the Monterey County Farm Bureau’s annual Bill Barker Memorial golf tournament in August at Bayonet/Black Horse along the Monterey coast.  The proceeds of this event benefit educational organizations including the Bill Barker Scholarship Fund, Monterey County Agricultural Education, and the continuing efforts of Monterey County Farm Bureau to maintain farming, ranching and agricultural business interests locally and statewide.
