NEWS FLASH: Mike Bushman Actually Goes on Vacation

Shocking but true: Mike Bushman finally took a few days off from work! In fact, in late August and September, he and wife Sue took a five-week cross-country journey not unlike the infamous roadtrip they took in a VW van way back in 1979 (see groovy photo on left).

This time around, the Bushman road warriors logged a total of 8,500 miles on their Ford Explorer, spending time with relatives in northern Minnesota, West Virginia, and Virginia. Along the way, they also saw plenty of buffalo roaming and antelope playing. The shot on the right was taken at Blackwater Falls, WV, a part of country that apparently still has plenty of water.

This trip was a bit of a trial run (both for Mike and for everyone at Headstart) for his coming semi-retirement at the end of this year. He'll be stepping down from the "guy who does it all" role he's held at the nursery for 26 years and will have more time to spend with his family and his bicycle. But he'll still be around to serve as a mentor and consultant.

Mike has been a tremendous part of Headstart Nursery's success, and we hope you will join us in wishing him and his family all the best in this new adventure!

Networking at the California Seed Association

Lisa Branco, Mike Trebino, Sergio Torres, J.R. Roth, and Daniel Clerou represented Headstart's sister company, Radicle Seed, at the California Seed Association mid-year meeting in Monterey, September 29-30.

This event is always a great opportunity to network with fellow seedsmen and learn about topics important to the industry. Plus it's also a good chance to brush up on bocce ball and golf skills. To get involved, go to

Headstart Attends Picas Users Conference

In mid-October, Melissa Campilli, Cole Iten, and Jim Browne attended the Picas User Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The event covered a wide variety of useful information about key enhancements and features and also provided the opportunity to brainstorm new ideas, directions and projects for the future.

The Headstart Gang Has Yachts of Fun

On August 1, the Costa families and several Headstart employees enjoyed a cruise down at Newport Beach on board the "Carol B" yacht. The trip was purchased at a fundraiser for the Coachella Valley Boys and Girls Club at the dinner honoring Mark Nickerson back in March.

As you can see, it was a gorgeous sunny day out on the water, and a good time was had by all!

Headstart in the Community

Headstart Sponsors 2015 California Rodeo Salinas

Headstart Nursery was once again proud sponsors of the 2015 California Rodeo Salinas, held July 21-24. Our contribution helps raise funds for local service and charitable organizations and creates opportunities for youths to participate in a nationally recognized community activity. Monterey Country Farm Bureau Golf Tournament

On August 20, Mike Trebino, Chris Peck, J.R. Roth, and Chris Cornia represented Team Headstart in the Monterey County Farm Bureau Bill Barker Memorial Golf Tournament. Lisa Branco also volunteered to help with registration and mulligan sales.

"Team Motivation" in the Salinas Valley Half Marathon

At this year's Salinas Valley Half Marathon, Headstart Nursery and Radicle Seed were sponsors of “Team Motivation” through Bayer, supporting two great charities: 20 Liters (dedicated to providing global access to clean water) and Motivation (supporting people with mobility disabilities around the world). Participating this year were Lili Medina, Chris Cornia, Quinn Snowden, and Lisa Branco

All in the Family

Lots of New (and Familiar) Faces Around the Nursery

In the last few months, we've welcomed several new employees and also had a few take on some new responsibilities.

In August, Evelyn Gonzlez (left) began working in our Gilroy Seed Department. Former Receptionist Rosie Reyes (second from left) is now a Customer Service Representative for the Ornamental Department. And Don Lydick (third from left) is our new Field Representative in the desert region.

Jennifer Speno (third from right) has been helping out in the Accounting Department for several months and has now joined us as our Accounting Manager. Lorena Garcia (second from right) went on maternity leave but is now back as a Customer Service Representative for the Vegetable Department.

And last but certainly not least, we've got another Costa in the house! Randy's son Thomas Costa (right), just started full-time as a Production Assistant.

Two New Sprouts

September 30 was a big day for the Headstart Nursery family! Customer Service Representative Heather Guibert, husband Justin, and big sister Raegan welcomed baby boy Jackson, who surprised everyone by arriving a few weeks early but is doing just great.

On the very same day, just a few hours later, Desert Logistics Coordinator Jesse Barriga also became a father, welcoming darling daughter Rosabella (shown in photo at right).

Congratulations to all!
