2016 California Spring Trials

We had a great turnout this year for California Spring Trials in April. Headstart partnered again with Danziger “Dan” Flower Farm to showcase some of the newest and most exciting ornamental products. We hosted around 800 visitors from major U.S. brokers, press, growers, and retail stores, as well as several international guests.

Shown above is a group of Fred C. Gloeckner & Co. sales reps who look happy to be soaking up the California sunshine!

Headstart Nursery patriarch Don Christopher (shown here with Steve and Randy Costa) even stopped by to check out Headstart’s displays of patio vegetables and herbs as well as specialty ornamental crops including cut flowers, annuals, perennials, and potted crops like Cyclamen, Gerbera, and Ranunculus.

This event is an outstanding opportunity to showcase the wide range of products Headstart offers and a great chance to build relationships with industry leaders. We can’t wait to do it all again next year (April 1-6, 2017)!

More Ornamental News

  • NEW Danziger Perennial Program
Do you have a customer seeking to create a mix for their program? We have teamed up with Danziger “Dan” Flower Farm to offer a special Danziger Perennial Program.  This program is listed in a 128 or 200 liner and will be packed with 5 trays per box at a landed price to you. Please note: our only minimum requirement is full boxes. Contact us for more information.

  • Certified Organic Transplants
Headstart Nursery takes pride in being one of the early pioneers in certified organic transplant production.  We have been certified for over 20 years, and our organic programs have grown steadily each year.  We currently produce about 100 million organic transplants each year!

  • Quality Still Comes First
For more than 30 years, everything we grow at Headstart Nursery has been “Rooted in Quality.” Our customers are our top priority, and we continue to make improvements to better serve your needs.  We look forward to working with you through another successful season!

CSA Flower Seed Tour

Aimee Darville, Communications Director with California Seed Association, and our own Lisa Branco, Chair of Industry Communications & Youth Activities, led the Flower Seed Tour on April 14.
Students from UC Davis, CSU Fresno, CSU Chico and Cal Poly (including Kevin Costa, shown here with dad Randy and big brother Thomas) made several stops throughout the Salinas Valley stops to learn about the seed industry and agriculture in general.  Those who opened their doors included Sakata Seed America, American Takii, Germain's Technology Group, Syngenta and Headstart Nursery/Radicle Seed.

The students were very engaged throughout the tour and excited to learn about the many different career opportunities that are out there for them to explore.

Headstart in the Community

  • In late February, our desert sales rep Don Lydick teed it up at the 88th annual Elmer Sears Lettuce Tournament in Brawley. The tournament celebrates the “King of Green” – not the type found at golf courses, but the long time staple of the Imperial Valley: lettuce.

  • In March, Doug and Bonny Iten attended the “Heart of Gold” Grand Auction benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley, and celebrating their 50th year providing programs and services that positively influence the lives of youth. Headstart is a longtime supporter of this organization, and it was great seeing so many of our desert customers at this event!

  • Also in March, the Radicle Seed team of Steve Costa, Randy Costa, Mike Trebino and Lisa Branco headed to the 76th Annual California Seed Association Convention in Napa, CA.  This was a good opportunity to network with producers and other dealers while discussing important topics affecting the seed industry. After years of only bocce or golf, Lisa helped to bring back the Tennis Tournament. Despite not having picked up a racket since high school, she managed to come home with a prize since only three other players (Brittany Trebino, Matt DiCori of Keithly Williams and Lance Atkins of Syngenta) signed up!

  • In May, Chris Peck, Artemio Perez, Thomas Costa and Chris Cornia participated in the Santa Clara County Farm Bureau golf tournament at San Juan Oaks. Headstart Nursery was a sponsor of this tournament, which raises money for school scholarships, Future Farmers of America, 4-H, County Fair, ag workshops for teachers, classroom curriculum, school gardens and community outreach. A good time was had by all!

  • Headstart Nursery and Radicle Seed are teaming up with Bayer Crop Science to recruit runners and sponsors for the Salinas Valley Half Marathon and help support two great charities: Motivation Freedom through Mobility and Monterey County Ag Education.  If you’d like to lace up your running shoes and participate with us, contact Lisa Branco.

All in the Family

Welcome William Medina (and Welcome Back Helder!)

William Medina (left) started in March as our new Logistics Coordinator in Gilroy. William describes himself as a “nature-loving CSUMB alumni and soccer aficionado” and is also a fan of the Oakland A’s. For him, this job is like coming full circle. He grew up on a farm in San Juan Bautista where his parents were farmworkers. Now he’s shipping transplants to farmers all around the central coast and learning more about the crops that are being planted and harvested in this part of California.

We’re all very happy to welcome William—and very grateful he joined the team when he did! After just a couple months on the job, he got a real “trial by fire” when Shipping and Logistics Manager Helder Faria (right) had emergency surgery and missed two weeks right at the start of our busiest shipping season. The team pulled together to make it through Helder’s absence—and we were all very happy to have him back on the job!

Con-GRAD-ulations Mitchell Fairhurst!

We’re very happy to announce that Mitchell Fairhurst, son of late Sales Representative Greg Fairhurst, recently graduated from the University of Redlands (he's shown here with proud mom Janelle). After Greg’s passing, Headstart Nursery and its customers raised more than $15,000 to help pay for his education.

Mitchell has really made the most of that support. He graduated with a BS in Business Administration with emphasis in Finance and a minor in Public Policy. While in school, he got to study in Europe, was involved in student government, worked as a trip leader in the school’s recreation department, and served as president of his school’s chapter of an international business fraternity. He hopes to work in private equity or corporate banking, and we are very excited to see what the future holds for this exceptional young man!

Peanuts & Crackerjack

Take them out to the ballgame! Before Headstart’s crazy busy season began, we sent Helder Faria, Chris Cornia, Artemio Perez and Grant Cornia to enjoy some Giants baseball at AT&T Park. These four guys are key to our production and logistics operations and a very important part of Headstart’s winning team.

The Great Desk Dump of 2016

You may recall seeing this photo in our previous newsletter as we celebrated boss-man Steve Costa’s 60th birthday. Well, the real boss in the family (Steve's wife Teresa) saw that picture and was appalled by the state of Steve’s desk. He continued to claim that he knew exactly where everything was, but she insisted on staging an immediate intervention.

Over the span of a couple weekends, they went through the piles upon piles of accumulated stuff and discovered some real treasures, including resumés from the 1980s, floppy disks, old Warriors schedules from Don Nelson era, and, for some reason, several screwdrivers (those were returned to Maintenance Manager Jose Gonzalez).

As you can see from the “After” photo below, there was a pretty nice desk hiding underneath all those piles!

Our Newest Sprout

Desert Manager Doug Iten and his wife Bonny are proud first-time proud parents of a healthy baby boy.

Bodie Jack Iten joined the Headstart team on June 11, 2016, weighing in at 8 lbs 2 oz and measuring 21" long.

Congratulations to the happy family!
