Headstart Nursery offers a number of ways to get plants to the field. Our staff works closely with each customer to decide which method is most convenient and economical.

Shipping Bins
For most growers, we use custom-built shipping bins that are loaded onto flatbed trailers and can be easily transported anywhere in the field with a forklift.

We have two sizes of bins, which hold either 45 or 72 Styrofoam trays per bin. We can also pack 10x20 polystyrene trays in these bins, using bottom racks on each level. Depending on plant height, we can generally pack about 80 polystyrene trays in a 45 bin or about 128 polystyrene trays in a 72 bin.

The 45 and 72 bins have the same outside dimensions: 87" L x 50 1/4" W x 56 1/4" H. A fully loaded set of doubles can carry 30 bins. A single large flatbed trailer can carry 16 bins.

Field Trailers
For local deliveries, we also have field trailers that carry trays directly from our greenhouses to the field. We generally leave trailers in the field and pick them up after planting. Each field trailer can carry up to 420 Styrofoam trays, 490 hard plastic trays, or about 630 polystyrene trays.

Pull-Packing in Wax Boxes
Some crops, like peppers and leeks, can be pulled out of the tray and packed in waxed corrugated boxes. We have two sizes of wax boxes, depending on the height of the plants:

Short box: 19 5/16" L x 13" W x 9 1/4" H
Tall box: 19 5/16" L x 13" W x 11 1/4" H

Wax boxes can either be hand-stacked or palletized and delivered in large enclosed dry vans. We can fit about 1,100 short boxes or 900 tall boxes in a typical 28.5' van. We can fit 56 short boxes or 49 tall boxes per pallet, and about 12-14 pallets per van.

Tray-Packing in Boxes
For crops such as watermelon that are grown in 10x20 polystyrene plug trays, Headstart Nursery ships in custom corrugated boxes with cardboard inserts. For watermelon, we typically ship 3 trays per box. Other crops may vary depending on plant height.

The box dimensions are 21 5/8" L x 12 1/4" W x 18 1/4" H. A full pallet is 28 boxes.

Boxes can be shipped via FedEx, Golden State Overnight, or OnTrac for long distance shipments. For west coast deliveries, we ship via OnTrac. Headstart Nursery also has its own large enclosed dry vans. We can hand-stack about 700 boxes or load 12-14 pallets per van.
